Set Up iPhone Automations to Turn on Low Power Mode

In this day and age, the phone is like a part of our body. We can’t do much without them. From checking in to flights, using them as navigation to paying the bills. We use our phones in almost all aspects of our lives. There is a price we pay for the convenience we get: the battery.

Battery life is the most common phone-related complaint. We have to be mindful of our phone’s battery level. Especially as the phone ages, you just have to charge your phone every single day, and it’s inevitable. However, there are ways to improve your phone’s battery life. I’m not going to get into every single one of them, since I’m not an expert and don’t know what really works for the most part.

What I will show you is an automation, meaning you set it up once, and it will happen according to the conditions you put in, ‘if statements’ if you have a computer science background. I set up these automations with the Shortcuts app on iPhone, so I cannot speak for Android phones. Here are the automations I set up to slightly improve my iPhones battery life.

Automation #1 — When the battery level falls below 40% (it doesn’t have to be 40%), set Low Power Mode.

  1. Open the Shortcuts app and tap the “Automation” bar at the bottom, then tap the “+” sign on top to create a new automation.

2. Tap the “Create Personal Automation” button.

3. Scroll down and tap “Battery Level”.

4. The default value will be 50%. Change it to whatever value you want, then tap “Next”. This is our condition, i.e., if.

5. Tap “Add Action” to select what you want this automation to do once your phone battery level hits 40%.

6. Tap “Set Low Power Mode” then tap “Next”.

7. Make sure the result is Turn Low Power Mode “On” then tap “Next”

8. Tap “Done” and you are all set. Your iPhone will automatically turn on the Low Power Mode once the battery level hits 40%.

Automation #2 — When you plug your iPhone to a charger, set Low Power Mode on

Every step is the same as the first automation, except for the third and fourth step.

3. Instead of tapping the “Battery Level”, tap “Charger”.

Then replace the fourth step with 5, and everything else will be the same.

This automation will turn the Low Power Mode on, when your phone is connected to a charger. Ideally, you would turn airplane mode on to charge your phone faster, but most of the time it’s hard to do that in the middle of the day. Activating the low power mode also helps to charge your phone faster.

I’ve been using these two automations for more than a month, and I see the difference in terms of my battery usage. The good thing about these automations is that I don’t have to go to settings to turn on the low power mode. I set the automations once, and I don’t have to do anything after, it happens by itself. Using these automations will improve your experience with your iPhone battery without you having to think about it.
